New SA records for La Rhone Limousins
The cold
and wet conditions in the Western Cape did not influence the
enthusiasm among buyers and friends at our recent Prestige
Spring sale in Moorreesburg. Some buyers already inspected
the animals the previous day and catalogues were marked
accordingly while the animals were still being prepared and
washed. After a most enjoyable evening with drinks and
dinner, everybody headed for the sale venue on the morning of 17
September.

La Rhone
exhibition
Clive Gardner,
well-known auctioneer, welcomed everbody with the remark “the
best yarding of
Limousins that I had ever seen”.
Lot 1
was the four-year-old three-in-one cow La Rhone Easter Girl LR056
(by FN0210) with a world class heifer calf of Sauvignon at foot.
She was sold to dr Friedel and Louise Mulke, stud breeder of
George, for a new SA record price of R95 000.00.

record priced cow LR056 La Rhone Easter Girl
Friedel and
Louise also bought the FN0210 heifer, LR0733, and also slashed the
SA record price for a heifer when they paid R65 000 for LR0753.
She is the first offspring of DK0330 to be offered for sale and is
in calf to the promising youngster at La Rhone, LR0810 La Rhone
Hitman. The Mulkes also added the bull, LR0721 La Rhone Great Day
to their purchases. Congratulations to these fine breeders with
the acquisition of what we believe to be some of the very best
Limousins in the country.
Lot 4 brought the
well-known La Rhone Dodge LR0410 into the ring. Being the
reigning SA Junior and Supreme Champion Bull, he was certainly
expected to fetch a record price, which he indeed did. When Clive
brought his hammer down, it was a proud and excited Willem Tromp,
of the Omassa stud in Okahandja, who became the new owner of this
proven sire. We are really proud to add this outstanding bull to
the Limousin industry in Namibia.

Another young
bull, who can be described as the “talk of the sale” was Lot 9,
LR074 La Rhone Ghandi (by Jacre Cobra). He displays extra
ordinary quality and muscling and must have been marked by quite a
a few buyers. For the price of R100 000 he was sold to Kobus van
Tonder of Pumba Limousins in Polokwane. Kobus has got top quality
females and with Ghandi in his breeding program, he is definitely
to become a force to be reckoned with in the
Limousin
industry. We will be watching the future of this bull with great
interest. Kobus also added the two heifers LR084 (by DK0330) and
LR0727 (by Jacre Dynamic) to his stud.

We were
privileged to have some of our good friends from Namibia enjoying
the dinner and sale with us. Apart from Willem Tromp, the well
known breeders Hannes and Janine Human (he is also the president
of the Limousin Society in Namibia), Siggy Wilckens, Siggi and
Heide Baas and their two lovely daughters, as well as Enrico
Junius attended. The Humans bought the bull with
“body, butt & balance” LR0712 La Rhone Gunston (by Leadwood Gatgai), as well as
the polled heifer LR0756 (by FN0210).
The 32-month old
three-in-one-cow, LR076 La Rhone Grace (by Jacre Cobra) with her
bull calf took top honours in the junior female interbreed
competition at Swartland skou the previous week, and was also a
great favourite among buyers. The successful buyer was Siggy
Wilckens who paid R70 000 for this excellent young cow. He also
bought NL0460 Yulanda Ladylike (by MEY9626) to add to his
outstanding Omateva Stud.

Siggi
& Heide Baas selected the bull LR0710 La Rhone Ghost (by Leadwood
Gatgai) and the heifer LR0731 to take home to their Ombende Stud.
Ghost was also used on several cows in our stud and his first
calves are expected towards the end of October.
Enrico Junius, who owns the Millenium Limousin stud near Rehoboth
acquired the beautiful cow HV0519 with her very young calf by
DK0330. Back at La Rhone she was, on request of Enrico, put with
FN0210.
We wish all the
Namibians best of luck with their new animals. We really
appreciate your friendship and support and look forward to our
next visit to your beautiful country.
At McDonald and
his son, Theo, selected some really good and proven three in one
females. They bought the cows, GA0312, RE0220 and VD05116 with
their calves and all in calf to FN0210. These cows are no gamble
– they have proved themselves as top breeding cows and will
certainly be an asset to the Donro herd. The top heifer, LR0746
(by FN0210 and out of the well known TK9310) was also added to
their list. It is really good to have the McDonalds boots and all
in the game again and we wish them all of the best for the future.
Johann and Amien
Eggers came down all the way from Keimoes and only arrived just
before the sale started. They, nevertheless, selected four
heifers for their Hierbegin Stud. LR0719, LR0744, LR0734 and
LR0726 by MR0147, LR0430, Wilzak Cachou Vahot and Leadwood Gatgai
respectively are all certified in calf from DK0330, FN0210 and
Dodge. All the prominent bloodlines together in one packet!
The very
masculine bull, LR0717 La Rhone General (by MR0147 and out of the
mother of Fudge, reigning SA Champion heifer) was selected by
Johann and Ansie Claassen of the Henbase Stud near Morgenzon.

LR0717
La Rhone General
The well-known
Joluza Stud was represented by our friends Ludwig and Anneri
Claassen, who took home another MR0147 son, LR0718 La Rhone Gambit
(out of Novar Fanta, who also bred Falcon which was sold to Piet
Coetzee of Namibia last year). We have great appreciation for
their assistance with the delivery of the sale animals to their
new owners in the North. Thank you very much!
Last, but not the
least, we also enjoyed the company of Jacob and Susan van der
Walt, with their friends, Johan and Elsa Wessels of Vanstadensrus.
The Van der Walts bought two bulls LR0714 La Rhone Genius and
LR0725 La Rhone Griekwa by Leadwood Gatgai and MR0147 respectively
for their commercial herd. We understand that they have got quite
a lot of nice purebred Limousin cows and believe that these two
bulls will take them a few steps closer to becoming stud breeders!
We would also
like to thank Corrie Meyer for his attendance and interest. He is
a dear friend and we learned a lot from him. Also to Koos and
Elna de Wet, who came all the way from Koppies to support us.
They bought some semen for their Limousin cows and we look forward
to these calves next year. Dr Kevin Robertson, breed director and
Sas Oosthuizen, Western Cape board member also attended and we
also have great appreciation for their presence and support. And
of course all our friends from the Western Cape who attended and
supported us before and during the event – we trust that you
enjoyed the day with us.
